As warehouses fight for every square metre of space, more sites are switching to very narrow aisle (VNA) racking. These high-density layouts need specialist trucks, and specialist trucks need specially trained operators. If you have been asked to get a VNA qualification, or you are an employer planning a VNA installation, this guide explains what VNA forklift training involves and who needs it.
What Is a VNA Forklift?
A VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) truck is designed to work in aisles far narrower than a standard reach truck or counterbalance forklift could manage. Instead of turning in the aisle to face the racking, a VNA truck travels straight down a guided aisle and picks or places loads to either side using a rotating or traversing fork head.
Most VNA trucks are guided by rails or a wire in the floor, which keeps them precisely centred. This lets warehouses build racking much higher and closer together, increasing storage capacity without expanding the building.
Man-Up vs Man-Down VNA Trucks
There are two main types of VNA truck, and the training covers both.
| Man-up VNA | Man-down VNA | |
|---|---|---|
| Operator position | Cab rises with the forks | Operator stays at ground level |
| Typical use | Full-pallet and case picking at height | Full-pallet put-away and retrieval |
| Visibility | Direct view of the load at all heights | Relies on cameras, height selectors and aids |
| Extra safety focus | Working at height, restraint and emergency lowering | Judging load position remotely |
Because man-up trucks lift people, they also bring extra legal duties for employers, including more frequent thorough examinations under LOLER and a clear rescue plan in case an operator becomes stranded at height.

Who Needs VNA Forklift Training?
Under HSE guidance (ACOP L117), operators must be trained on the specific type of truck they use. A counterbalance or reach truck certificate does not cover VNA trucks. You will need VNA training if you are:
- A warehouse operative moving onto a VNA truck for the first time.
- An experienced reach truck driver whose site is installing very narrow aisle racking.
- An operator who has used a VNA truck without accredited training.
- A certified VNA operator due a refresher assessment.
- An employer who needs a team trained before a new VNA system goes live.
What Does a VNA Course Cover?
Our VNA lift truck training combines theory and practical sessions, covering:
- Truck overview – controls, components and guidance systems.
- Pre-use inspection – daily safety checks before operating.
- Aisle entry and travel – entering guidance safely and travelling under control.
- Load handling – placing and retrieving loads at height in tight spaces using smooth hydraulic control.
- Man-up operation – safe working at height and high-level picking.
- Emergency procedures – what to do if the truck stops or the operator needs to be lowered.
- Battery care – charging and maintenance.
How Long Does VNA Training Take?
Course length depends on your experience. Typical durations for man-up and man-down VNA training (up to three trainees) are:
| Course | Duration |
|---|---|
| Novice operators | 3–5 days |
| Experienced (untrained) operators | 3–4 days |
| Refresher training | 1 day |
| Conversion training | 1 day |

Specific Job Training and Familiarisation
HSE guidance describes three stages of operator training: basic training, specific job training and familiarisation. Even after passing a VNA course, operators should be introduced to their own site’s racking, aisle layout, guidance system and emergency procedures before working unsupervised. This is where onsite forklift training is especially valuable, because we can train your team on your trucks, in your aisles.
VNA vs Other Warehouse Trucks
VNA is often the next step for experienced warehouse operators. Many start on a counterbalance, move onto reach trucks, then progress to VNA or Bendi trucks. If you are still deciding on your first course, read reach truck vs counterbalance: which course first?

FAQs: VNA Forklift Training
Do I need a separate licence for a VNA truck?
Yes. VNA trucks handle very differently from counterbalance or reach trucks, so you need training and certification on VNA specifically.
Can I train on man-up and man-down VNA together?
Yes. Our VNA course can cover man-up and man-down units, depending on what you use at work.
How often do VNA operators need refresher training?
Refresher training is recommended regularly, and many employers work to a three-year cycle. A VNA refresher usually takes one day.
Can you deliver VNA training at our warehouse?
Yes. We deliver forklift training for companies onsite nationwide, so your operators can train on the trucks and aisles they use every day.
