Result Forklift Training

If you have started looking at forklift courses, you have almost certainly seen two names come up again and again: RTITB and NPORS. Both are well-known accrediting bodies, both are recognised across UK industry, and both lead to a forklift certificate. So what is the actual difference, and does it matter which one you choose?

The short answer: for most warehouse and logistics jobs, either is acceptable, but the right choice depends on where you want to work and what your employer (or future employer) asks for. This guide breaks down RTITB vs NPORS in plain English so you can book the right course first time.

What Is RTITB?

RTITB is one of the UK’s longest-established accrediting bodies for workplace transport and lift truck training. It sets standards for forklift instructors, training providers and the tests operators sit, and it is the name most people associate with warehouse forklift licences. You can read a full overview on our What is RTITB? page.

Key points about RTITB forklift training:

  • It is the most widely requested accreditation in warehousing, distribution, retail and manufacturing.
  • Courses follow a standardised test structure covering pre-use inspection, theory and practical driving.
  • Successful operators can be added to RTITB’s national register, which lets employers check training records.
  • Training providers and instructors are audited to keep standards consistent.

What Is NPORS?

NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) started life in construction and plant machinery, and it now accredits lift truck training too. It is a flexible, cost-effective scheme that is accepted on construction sites nationwide, especially where a CSCS-logo card is needed. Our What is NPORS? page explains the scheme in more detail.

Key points about NPORS forklift training:

  • Strong recognition across construction, civil engineering and plant hire.
  • Offers card options with or without the CSCS logo, which matters on many major sites.
  • Has a clear route from a Red Trained Operator card to a Blue Competent Operator card once you complete the relevant NVQ.
  • Covers forklifts alongside plant such as telehandlers and excavators.

Does the Law Require One Over the Other?

No. There is no single government-issued forklift licence in the UK. What the law requires, through the HSE’s Approved Code of Practice L117, is that operators are adequately trained, tested and authorised by their employer. Both RTITB and NPORS courses meet that standard, which is why both are accepted as proof of training.

What really decides it is the employer or site. A national distribution centre may specify RTITB in its job adverts, while a main contractor on a construction site may insist on an NPORS card with the CSCS logo. If you already have a job lined up, the simplest step is to ask which accreditation they want.

Which Accreditation Is Right for You?

Choose RTITB if:

  • You want a warehouse, logistics or factory job, particularly around Peterborough, Northampton or the wider East of England distribution corridor.
  • You are applying through agencies that list “RTITB counterbalance” or “RTITB reach” in their adverts.
  • You plan to add more warehouse trucks later, such as reach trucks, VNA trucks or Bendi trucks.

Choose NPORS if:

  • You work, or want to work, on construction sites where a CSCS-logo card is required.
  • You also operate plant machinery such as telehandlers, dumpers or excavators and want your qualifications on one scheme.
  • Your employer has asked specifically for NPORS.

Still unsure? Many operators start with an RTITB counterbalance forklift course because it opens the most doors in warehousing, then add NPORS cards later if they move into construction. If you are weighing up NPORS against CPCS for site work, our guide to NPORS vs CPCS forklift training covers that comparison too.

What Happens on an Accredited Forklift Course?

Whichever scheme you choose, the course structure is very similar. You will typically cover:

  1. Pre-use inspection – checking tyres, forks, chains, hydraulics, brakes and safety devices before operating.
  2. Theory – stability, load centres, rated capacity, safe stacking and site rules.
  3. Practical training – manoeuvring, stacking and de-stacking at height, and working in confined areas.
  4. Assessment – a theory test plus a practical test with an accredited instructor.

FAQs: RTITB vs NPORS

Is RTITB better than NPORS?

Neither is better in every situation. RTITB is the most requested accreditation in warehousing and logistics, while NPORS is strongly recognised in construction. Both meet HSE training standards.

Can I use an NPORS forklift card in a warehouse?

Usually, yes. Most warehouse employers accept NPORS-accredited training, but some larger operators specify RTITB, so check the job advert or ask the employer.

How long does an RTITB or NPORS forklift certificate last?

Certificates do not legally expire, but refresher training and reassessment are recommended, typically every three years. NPORS cards also carry their own validity dates. Our guide to forklift licence renewal and refresher training explains this in full.

Do you offer both RTITB and NPORS courses in Peterborough?

Yes. Result Forklift Training offers both RTITB and NPORS-accredited forklift courses at our Peterborough centre and onsite nationwide. Browse all forklift training courses or call us on 01733 665 662.
