Whether you are looking to start a career in warehousing, logistics, or construction – or your employer has asked you to get certified – this page explains everything you need to know about getting a forklift licence in the UK. At Result, we make the process straightforward, affordable, and as fast as possible without cutting corners.
A forklift licence – also referred to as a forklift certificate or operator card – is a nationally recognised qualification that certifies you to safely operate a forklift truck in the workplace. In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requires that all forklift operators are adequately trained and hold a relevant certification before operating a truck.
Unlike a driving licence, there is no single government-issued forklift licence. Instead, certification is issued by accredited training bodies such as RTITB and NPORS. Result is accredited by both, meaning the certificates we issue are recognised by employers across every major industry in the UK.
Yes. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), employers are legally required to ensure that anyone operating a forklift truck is adequately trained. Operating a forklift without proper certification puts you, your employer, and your colleagues at risk – and exposes your employer to significant legal liability.
Most reputable employers will not allow anyone to operate a forklift without a valid, externally accredited certificate. An in-house or company-only licence is not recognised outside of the organisation that issued it.
There are two main accreditation bodies for forklift training in the UK – RTITB and NPORS. Result is accredited by both, which means we can issue either type of certificate depending on what you or your employer requires.
RTITB (Road Transport Industry Training Board) is the most widely recognised accreditation in the warehousing, logistics, and distribution sectors. Most major employers – including supermarket distribution centres, Amazon, DHL, and similar operations – accept and often specifically request RTITB certification. Your RTITB certificate is valid for 3 years.
