Passing your forklift test is a big achievement, but for many new operators, the question immediately after is: what do I do now? Whether you have just completed your counterbalance course or earned your reach truck licence, here is exactly what to expect and what to do next.

You Will Receive Your Certificate and Photo ID Card
Once you pass both the theory and practical assessment, you will be issued your RTITB or NPORS certificate along with a photo ID card. This is your proof of qualification and what employers will ask to see before allowing you to operate any forklift truck. Keep it safe, you will need it every time you start a new job or contract.
Your Licence Is Valid for 3 Years
Your forklift certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. After that, you will need to complete a refresher course to renew it. Mark the expiry date somewhere you will not forget it, many operators let their licence lapse and then have to retrain from a longer course than necessary.
Start Applying for Jobs Straight Away
A nationally recognised forklift licence opens doors across warehousing, logistics, manufacturing, construction, and retail. Update your CV immediately to include your certification type (RTITB or NPORS), the truck type you are licensed on, and the date of issue. Employers in the East Midlands and across the UK actively look for certified operators, and demand is consistently high.

Consider Adding More Licences to Increase Your Value
The more truck types you are certified on, the more attractive you are to employers. Many operators start with a counterbalance licence and then add reach truck, PPT, or telehandler training shortly after. Dual-licensed operators consistently command better pay and have more job options available to them.
If you are thinking about adding to your qualifications, our forklift training centre Peterborough runs courses 7 days a week and can often accommodate a follow-up booking within days of your initial qualification.
Book Your Next Course Before Your Enthusiasm is High
This sounds simple, but the best time to book additional training is right now, when the experience is fresh, your confidence is high, and you are already in the mindset of learning. Many operators who plan to come back for a second licence put it off for months or years.
Head to our book forklift training page to check availability and secure your next course date while it is still front of mind.
Keep a Record of Your Training
Store a digital copy of your certificate as well as the physical card. Employers, agencies, and labour contractors will frequently ask for proof of certification before placing you in a role. Having a photo of your certificate on your phone means you can send it over instantly when an opportunity comes up.
What If You Did Not Pass First Time?
Do not be disheartened, it happens. Our instructors will give you clear feedback on where you need to improve, and a resit can usually be arranged quickly. The important thing is not to leave it too long before trying again, as the practical skills and theory knowledge are freshest in the days immediately after your first attempt.
