Yes, as stated by Result, individuals cannot undergo forklift training unless they are above the minimum school leaving age. However, it is mentioned that those aged 18 and above are permitted to operate forklifts when employed in ports.

Handling heavy materials while operating a forklift can be risky, especially if the operator is not able to get in and out of the vehicle comfortably. For this reason, it is advised that all forklift truck operators meet the required medical fitness standards to ensure safe operation.

In certain countries, possessing a forklift license is a requirement. Even if you already have one, undergoing additional training is still advisable as some employers may not recognize your existing certification. Furthermore, since different countries have varying operational conditions for forklift use, it’s essential to ensure you are completely confident and skilled while operating the equipment.

Regular refresher training is not strictly mandated by law, but the Approved Code of Practice advises that such training should be provided periodically. The Workplace Transport Regulations (2005) also support this recommendation. Consequently, many employers opt to conduct refresher training sessions and assessments every 3 to 5 years. In the event of an accident, authorities will likely investigate when the operators were last trained. If the training took place a significant amount of time ago, it could be argued in court that refresher training was overdue.

Moreover, if you are registered with the NORS system, you are required to complete a refresher course every three years.
